This tale of passion and violence continues to fascinate, but Benjamin Millepied offers a decidedly modern take, with a strong social dimension exploring immigration at the border between Mexico and the United States.
He follows a young Mexican woman (Melissa Barrera) as she attempts to cross the border and encounters an American patrol, including Aidan (Paul Mescal), a former Marine suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. When another patrol sets out to harm her, Aidan saves her life by killing one of his fellow soldiers.
Nicholas Britell’s music gives the film its hypnotic pulse: a powerful score blending orchestra, choir, voices and contemporary sounds, like a distant echo of Bizet’s opera.
Flamenco, electric colours, sensuality and violence shape a lyrical, tribal and contemporary world somewhere between Tony Gatlif and Emir Kusturica.
