In a small village in occupied France, a group of Roma people settles in for the grape harvest. Among them, Taloche, with his violin slung over his shoulder and freedom running through his veins, fascinates nine-year-old P’tit Claude, who discovers a different way of life through their company.
But the war is tightening its grip. Checks become more frequent, the Vichy regime forbids Roma people from travelling freely, and the threat posed by the police and the Gestapo grows more ominous by the day.
Blending music, friendship and a thirst for freedom, Tony Gatlif delivers a deeply moving and profoundly human film, driven by powerful energy. A story of childhood and resistance, in which music becomes a refuge and the open road remains a symbol of freedom.
A vibrant, sun-drenched and deeply committed film.
