Screening of Time of the Gypsies
The journey continues…
Perhan, a young Romani man living in a shantytown in Skopje with his grandmother and his sister, who has a disability, dreams of marrying Azra. His life takes a dramatic turn when Ahmed, a crime boss, promises him wealth and medical care for his sister in exchange for accompanying him to Italy. There, Perhan discovers a world of organized begging, theft and child exploitation.
Lured by money, Perhan gradually rises through the ranks of the criminal network, only to discover Ahmed’s betrayal: his sister has never received treatment and has herself been forced to beg. Devastated, he vows to take revenge. After finding his sister and securing his son’s safety, he kills Ahmed on his wedding day, but is himself mortally wounded.
Blending realism and poetry, Time of the Gypsies is a tragedy about love, family, freedom and the loss of innocence, brought to life through music and the distinctive world of Emir Kusturica.
