Screening of Underground
Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, Underground is a masterpiece of European cinema. In an epic, larger-than-life saga, Emir Kusturica weaves together love, friendship, betrayal and madness against the backdrop of fifty years of history in the former Yugoslavia.
From the Second World War to the Balkan conflicts, two friends see their lives transformed by a lie that traps them for decades in an entirely fabricated reality.
With exhilarating brass bands, extravagant banquets, slapstick humour and profound tragedy, Kusturica creates a baroque universe where laughter and drama constantly collide.
Part political fable, part surrealist tale and part extraordinary celebration of life, Underground is a work of remarkable visual and emotional power.
An unforgettable film exploring memory, manipulation and freedom, driven by the musical energy and flamboyant imagination that define Emir Kusturica’s distinctive style.
